We started out the week at the Minnesota Zoo. Our good friends, Sam and Kelly, came with us (sometimes I think they belong in a zoo). We packed plenty of water and a picnic lunch, and crammed it all into the stroller. There was hardly any room for Joey! I think he was a little overwhelmed by the crowd, I had hoped it would be a slow day because it was a Monday, there were a lot of summer camps and daycares visiting. We started out with the monkeys, one of the momma monkeys had a baby just a few months earlier, and he (she?) was adorable! Jumping and playing all over the place, and of course climbing all over its' mother. Hmm, bet I know what that feels like!
We also watched the dolphin show right away in the morning. I think Joey enjoyed it, at least he stopped whining to get down and watched the dolphins instead. We had hoped to see the shark feeding, but the crowd was so thick we couldn't see a thing. A lot of the zoo was pretty boring to Joey, it was a warm day and many of them were napping in the shade. He really enjoyed the otters swimming around, and the meerkats running everywhere. I think his favorite part was the farm. He is still a little spooked by the big cows, and didn't want much to do with the pigs or the day old piglets, but he spent a L-O-N-G time petting the bunnies! We knew he would love the bunnies, he is always exclaiming over them when they are in the yard, or in his books. I think if this keeps up we might have to get a pet bunny when he gets older (just kidding, honey!)
Overall, Joey did fantastic. We spent nearly 7 hours at the zoo and he never really lost it or got upset. He was pretty content just riding around in his stroller looking at fish and animals.
On Tuesday Kelly's parents were nice enough to let us use their beach and goof off for the afternoon. It was Joey's first experience with sand this summer. It took him a while to get used to the feeling, and he wasn't so sure about the waves washing the sand out from under his feet. Though before long he was digging holes, jumping off the dock (with help!), and walking out as deep as he could. It was a great way to spend a hot summer afternoon.
On Wednesday we left for Kelly's cabin (we spent a lot of time with Sam/Kelly last week). We had a wonderful time splashing around in the lake, reading cruddy magazines, and jumping on the trampoline. We also brought our bikes and went on the Paul Bunyon Trail a bit. That was wonderful! We biked into town for ice cream on Thursday, and went back on Friday for the 4th of July parade. It was a short ride, only about 10 miles round trip. Just long enough for Joey to fall asleep in the burley, and then wake up cranky just to go back in the burley 30 min later. That part was not fun. But he did enjoy the parade, especially the marching band. I hope we can take him to another parade sometime this summer.
We finally rested on Sunday, and after that busy vacation we really needed a break!
